Abstract
Initial Primary Education as program of study in higher education – as continuing
teacher students unfold it
Initial primary education is a new program of study in higher education. As a new program, it has yet to establish a commonly shared understanding of what the study entails. An investigation into student exams, from continuing teacher students, however, has been done to identify central and unifying themes. Analysis of coherence across disciplines in the study at the assignment level, paragraph level and textual level suggests a distinct disciplinary focus in 474 of 663 paragraphs. The concept of play, however, dominates as a unifying, interdisciplinary core, together with more peripheral themes regarding the learning environment, cooperation and participation. Initial elementary/primary education as a distinct program of study can, therefore, potentially contribute to an interdisciplinarity that ensures holistic learning across disciplinary premises.
